Questions and answers

Straight answers about propane tanks, gas lines, permits and how we work. Don’t see yours? Ask us.

Smell gas? If you smell gas, leave the area right away. Do not use light switches, phones, lighters or anything that could make a spark on the way out. Once you are a safe distance away, call 911 and your gas company. Do not try to find or fix the leak yourself. When everyone is safe and the area is cleared, call us at 954-945-9591 to inspect and repair the system.

Owning your tank

Do I own the tank or rent it?

You own it. Red Brick sells you the tank and the gas system; we do not lease them. That means no tank rental fees. In Florida, only a tank’s owner, or someone the owner authorizes, may fill it, so as the owner the choice is yours.

Is the first fill included?

Yes. The first fill of propane is included with your installation, so the system is ready to use when we finish.

I rent my tank from a gas company. Can I switch?

Yes. We install a tank that you own and connect it to your home, and your current company picks up the tank that belongs to it. Read your lease first: it says how the company picks up its tank and whether any fees apply. In Florida, only a tank’s owner, or someone the owner authorizes, may fill it, so once the tank is yours, who fills it is your choice.

Planning your install

How does the quote work?

It starts with a free site visit. We look at the property, where the tank can go and how far the gas line runs, and give you a written quote at that same visit, in English or Spanish. If you like it, you can sign it right there on our phone or tablet.

What size tank do I need?

Common home tank sizes are 120, 250, 500 and 1,000 gallons. The right size depends on what the gas will run (a generator, pool heater, water heater, range) and how long you want to go between fills. We size the tank for you at the free site visit.

Underground or above ground?

We install both. An underground tank is buried, so you only see a small lid in the yard. An above-ground tank needs no digging, so it usually costs less to install. At the site visit we look at your yard and show you both options in your quote.

Is it safe? How far from the house?

Propane tanks have to sit set distances from buildings, property lines and anything that could make a spark, under the national propane code (NFPA 58). For example, an above-ground tank of 125 to 500 gallons usually goes at least 10 feet from the house. We pick the exact spot at the site visit so it meets code, and every system is pressure-tested before it is used.

Do I need my HOA’s approval?

Many homeowners associations ask for approval before an outdoor tank goes in, and some have rules on where it sits or how it is screened. Check your HOA’s rules early. For your application, we can give you the tank size, a sketch of where it goes and the product details from your quote. If your HOA does not want a tank in view, an underground tank, where all you see is a small lid, is an option to ask about.

How long does installation take?

It depends on the job and on the permit for your address. We go over the steps and the expected schedule with you when we give you your quote.

Permits and safety

Do you handle permits? How long do they take?

Yes. Gas work needs a permit from your city or county, and we take care of the permit and the inspections. How long a permit takes depends on the local building department, so we tell you what to expect for your address with your quote.

Do you call 811 before digging?

Yes. Before we dig, we call Sunshine 811 so the underground utility lines (power, water, cable and others) are marked. It is required in Florida, and we take care of it.

Do you do pressure tests and leak checks?

Yes. We do pressure testing and leak detection on propane systems, and can certify a system before your inspection. If you smell gas right now, leave the area and call 911 first.

What about hurricanes and flooding?

We anchor every tank we install, as the code requires in South Florida’s flood and high-wind areas. Before a storm, check that your tank has enough propane, especially if it runs a generator, and keep the area around it clear. After a storm, if the tank has moved, a line looks damaged or you smell gas, stay away from it: from a safe distance, call 911 and your gas company, and have the system checked before you use it again.

I smell gas. What do I do?

If you smell gas, leave the area right away. Do not use light switches, phones, lighters or anything that could make a spark on the way out. Once you are a safe distance away, call 911 and your gas company. Do not try to find or fix the leak yourself. When everyone is safe and the area is cleared, call us at 954-945-9591 to inspect and repair the system.

What we install

Do you hook up generators?

Yes. We install the propane tank and the gas line for standby generators, and size the tank so it can carry your generator through an outage. The generator itself and the electrical work are not included unless they are listed on your quote, so ask us about them at the site visit.

Do you install gas for pool heaters?

Yes. We set the tank and run the gas line to gas pool and spa heaters. A pool heater uses a lot of gas, so we size the tank for it.

Do you do gas water heaters?

Yes. We run the gas line and set the tank for tankless and tank-style gas water heaters.

Can you run gas to a range or outdoor kitchen?

Yes. We install gas lines to ranges, outdoor kitchens and grills, dryers and other gas appliances, from a new or existing tank. Every line is pressure-tested before it goes into use.

Do you work on food trucks?

Yes. We install propane systems for food trucks and can check and certify the system before your inspection.

Do you do commercial work?

Yes. Besides homes, we install propane systems for businesses, including food trucks. Tell us about the project and we will set up a visit.

Price and payment

How much does it cost?

Every property is different. The price depends on the tank size, above ground or underground, how long the gas line is, and the local permit. That is why we price it at a free site visit: you get the full written price, with options, before any work starts.

How do the deposit and payment work?

A deposit is due when you sign the quote, and the balance when the job is done. Your quote shows the exact amounts. For payment methods, just ask us.

Is there a warranty?

Please ask us. We will explain the warranty for your installation and your equipment when we give you your quote.
